Although dental implant surgery is a routine procedure for many patients, preparing ahead of time can make the experience easier and support a smoother recovery. If you’re scheduled for the procedure, here are 4 ways to get ready.

1. Follow Your Dentist’s Pre-Surgery Instructions

Your dentist or oral surgeon will provide instructions based on your specific procedure and health history. These may include guidelines about eating, drinking, medications, and oral hygiene before surgery.

Be sure to tell your dental team about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you take, as well as any medical conditions or allergies. Don’t stop taking prescribed medications unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

If you’ll be receiving sedation, pay especially close attention to instructions about fasting and transportation. You may need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a period afterward.

2. Prepare Your Home for Recovery

It’s helpful to make your recovery area comfortable before the day of surgery. Stock your pantry and fridge with soft, nutritious foods that are easy to eat, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and mashed potatoes.

You may also want to have ice packs available to help manage swelling according to your dentist’s instructions. Arrange a comfortable place like your recliner or couch where you can rest and keep essentials such as water, medications, and your phone within easy reach.

Planning ahead can minimize unnecessary activity while you’re recovering.

3. Arrange Time Away from Work and Exercise

Your recovery time will depend on the complexity of your procedure and your individual response to treatment. Some people can return to desk work relatively quickly, while others may need additional time away from work that involves physical labor.

Ask your dentist how much time you should plan to take off. You should also find out when you can safely resume exercise and other strenuous activities.

If your treatment includes additional procedures, such as bone grafting, you may need a longer recovery period.

4. Plan Your Transportation

If you’re receiving sedation or anesthesia, you generally shouldn’t plan to drive yourself home. Arrange transportation ahead of time so you aren’t scrambling for a ride after surgery.

Even if you’re not receiving sedation, having someone available to help you get home can be reassuring, particularly if you’re feeling tired or uncomfortable after the procedure.

Don’t worry – dentists perform dental implant surgery all the time! Just make sure you’re prepared so you can set the stage for a smooth recovery.
