Broken denture that has been fixed. Unfortunately, even with the best care, a broken denture can be unavoidable. If you find yourself in this position, you might think you’re out of options as the country faces the COVID-19 pandemic. Believe it or not, many dental offices are available for patients needing immediate care, like those who require urgent denture repair. While you wait for your appointment, here’s what you can do at home to make the difficult situation a little easier.

Home Care Tips for a Broken Denture

No matter the reason, you should seek out denture repair quickly. While you wait for an appointment with your dentist, here are 3 steps to follow:

  1. Gather Any Pieces: Gather any pieces that might have broken off and place them in a container until your appointment.
  2. Apply Dental Wax: If there are any loose clasps or sharp pieces irritating your gums, apply a dental wax to the area to create a protective barrier.
  3. Remove Your Dentures: Take your dentures out and soak them in their protective case. It’s best to stop wearing them until after they have been repaired.

Can I Use an At-Home Repair Kit?

Denture repair kits are available over-the-counter. Although this might seem like the convenient solution, your dentist will advise against it. You also shouldn’t use glues because they contain harmful chemicals.  If you try to fix your denture on your own, it may cause irreparable damage to the point even your dentist can’t save it.

Don’t Wait to Call Your Dentist

Although you might be hesitant to visit your dentist with the current uncertainties of COVID-19, it’s important to get the care you need quickly. Don’t worry, your dentist has updated their safety protocols to ensure their office is the cleanest place you’ll visit all day. With them, you can restore a beautiful, healthy smile without worrying about any illnesses.
