person with a toothacheAt work, you begin feeling a throbbing pain in your tooth that keeps distracting you from what you’re doing. You don’t want to make a big deal out of it and feel like if you just muscle through the day, you’ll be fine tomorrow. Well, what do you do when the pain continues? Putting off your oral discomfort could cause you even bigger problems. Knowing what to do when you have a dental dilemma on your hands can be the difference between losing and saving a tooth. Read on for tips on how to handle common problems from your emergency dentist in Bartlesville.

Severe Toothache

If you have a severe toothache, first, you’ll want to rinse your mouth with lukewarm, salt water. This will help sterilize the area, reduce inflammation, and help heal any oral wounds if you have them. If your mouth is swollen, applying an ice pack to the outside of your mouth or cheek can help reduce the swelling. Remember not to put aspirin on your gums or near your tooth because it can burn the gum tissue. While you’re doing all of this, get to your dentist as soon as possible.

Chipped Or Cracked Tooth

This dilemma can happen in a moment’s notice, which is why it’s vital to react quickly. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water and collect any broken pieces you can find. If your mouth is bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the affected area until the blood clots. Applying a cold compress to the area on your face that was impacted can help keep swelling down and ease any pain or discomfort.

Lost Dental Crown

If your restoration comes out of your mouth, it’s important to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can. Without your dental crown, your tooth is left defenseless against oral bacteria and infection. If you’re not able to get in to see your dentist that same day and your tooth is causing you pain, apply a small amount of clove oil to the affected area with a cotton swab. If you’re able to, place the crown back on your tooth using toothpaste or denture adhesive to help hold it in place.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth gets knocked out, immediately find and retrieve it because your dentist may be able to save it. Holding it by the biting surface, gently rinse it off and attempt to put it back in its socket. If you’re not able to, place it in a glass of milk or between your gums and cheek to keep it moist. Get to your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist is more likely to be able to save your tooth if you get to them within the first hour of it being knocked out.

While dental emergencies can’t be completely avoided, knowing how to react can help save your tooth along with the headache of future oral health problems. Emergencies can be stressful and have you filled with panic, but being prepared can go a long way.
